Taking a Look at Aromatherapy

Uchenna Ani-Okoye Said:

Aromatherapy is the holistic and traditional system of treatment which has been resulting proven from long time back. It is brought into action by application of Essential Oil in a mix of carrier oil to provide relief to patient from almost all diseases. It can give relaxation to a person from tension and stress of mind and body.

When the highly concentrated Essential Oil in carrier oil is diluted and applied to patient body through techniques of massage then it provides the magical treatment to mind and body of patient. So to bring the magic of aromatherapy into action and to transform the theories into reality and facts proper massage is basic requirement. So some knowledge about massage is also essential.

What is Massage?

Massage is to touch the body with the intention of relieving the pain. The most important thing is to remember while giving a massage is let your instinct be your guide. You should have an aim to relief the body of patient from tension, stress and pain. So Massage should be given with purity of heart and honesty. Your body and mind should be free from tension and stress while giving a massage otherwise it is possible that you may transmit your tension and stress to receiver body.

To cure most emotional and physical problems regular massage session are necessary which can bring dramatic changes to both mind and body. It is said that magic of massage is a gift because the ability to give a magical massage without training is a gift and some people are born with this gift. But those who are not born with this gift can extend their skills and learn this magic so that massage can become an integral part of their life.

How can one learn magic of massage?

When one is desirous of mastering the art and wishes to help someone feel better. Put your ego aside and listen to what the receiver body is telling you. Let your instincts guide your hands as you fill your being with love and allow your compassion to flow from you to the receiver. When you function with purely instinctual basis, you are automatically in touch with those magical forces that allow you to sense things which normally escape your awareness.

A person giving massage to another person should also take care of following things like he should be free from any tension and stress. He should not be suffering from any disease. If this is so that the person giving massage to another person is suffering from cold hen there are possibilities that he will transfer his own problems to receiver body and receiver will be sicker. A physically and mentally sound person can only give effective massage if he knows the art of massage.

Caroline Begin Said:

Teas and relaxation herbs have been used for centuries to help people relax, gain more energy, lose weight, as well as many other benefits.  This article will enlighten you on a few relaxation herbs that you can use at home to relax.

Chamomile Tea – The Common Way to Relax with Tea

Chamomile Tea (also spelled camomile tea) is a well-known tea to help people who have trouble sleeping.  Its aroma helps release tension and prepares your body and mind for a relaxing night.  It doesn’t contain caffeine and it can also help settle an irritable bowel.

In case you’ve tried and disliked chamomile tea in the past, you should try the “loose leaf” or “loose flower” version.  The flavor is not as bland as the chamomile tea bag version.  For more information on chamomile tea, visit:

Headache, Indigestion and Congested Sinus Relief

Ginger can help relieve tension headaches, indigestion or congested sinuses.  In addition, it can also help pregnant women deal with morning sickness and it will not harm the fetus.

Here is how to prepare ginger tea at home:

1. Grate enough fresh ginger to produce 2 tsp of ginger.

2. In a pot, bring 1 1/2 cup of water to a boil with the freshly grated ginger.  Let it boil for 5 minutes.

3. Remove from heat and let it steep for 10 minutes.

4. Pour in a cup and sip slowly while inhaling the steam as you drink the ginger infusion.

Rosemary Tea – Perfect Herbal Remedy for PMS

If you suffer from PMS, add 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary to a cup of boiling water. Cover your cup and let it steep for about 12 minutes.  Drink slowly and enjoy.

Relaxation Herbs Combined into Delicious Tea

Here is a blend of tea that you can use at home to relax.  You should be able to find all of these ingredients from a local naturalist store.

1 tsp Raspberry Leaf

1/2 tsp Chamomile Flower

1/2 tsp Rosemary Leaf

1/4 tsp Licorice Root

Other Ways to Enjoy Relaxation Herbs – Aromatherapy

There are many other ways relaxation herbs can be incorporated into your life to help you relax.  For example, you can use aromatherapy and benefit from particular herbs such as jasmine.  Jasmine essential oil can be added to your bath to relax your muscles and improve your mood.  Try adding 10 to 15 drops of jasmine oil to warm bath water.

You can also use lavender to promote a good night sleep.  If you have access to dried lavender flowers, simply place a few in your pillowcase.  The aroma will help lull you to sleep and remove the tension in your muscles.

How to Create the Right Atmosphere for Aromatherapy Massage?

Nick Mutt Said:

It would really be fantastic to be massaged in a tropical country, with the warm sun beating down, soft sounds of the sea in the background and the sweet scents of flowers occasionally wafting over you. Well perhaps it’s like a dream but it is still possible to create a lovely, relaxing atmosphere at home, especially with the help of aromatherapy oils.

I think the most important consideration is that the room or area, you use to give a massage is really warm. It’s a good idea to have a blanket, or large towel, so you can cover the parts of the body you are not working on. Also, it feels good to be wrapped up while being massaged. If you like, you can even wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and pop it under your patient’s feet for a really luxurious treat.

Harsh, bright lights are unpleasant when being massaged. A table lamp gives a softer, gentler light than overhead lighting. Once you feel happy about your massage movements you can work by candlelight. The soft flickering of the flames has a soothing, hypnotic effect which is really relaxing.

Try to keep noise to the minimum, and close the curtains or blinds. This helps to cut out traffic noise. If you think you may be disturbed, unplug the telephone or switch off your mobile. Buy some really interesting music to play in the background. Music can be great help in creating a relaxing atmosphere. Sounds of the sea, tinkling bells, birdsong and running water all combined with gentle, lulling music can take you off into a dream like state.

Aromatherapy oils are marvelous for creating different atmospheres in the home and are much more authentic than using perfume sprays. There are several ways of scenting your home with essential oils. The simplest is probably to add a few drops of your chosen oil to a small bowl of water and then stand it over a radiator. The essential oil floats on the water and gradually evaporates into the air, aided by the heat.

A more sophisticated method is to use an oil burner or vaporizer. These come in many different designs, but with oil burners there is no need to use any water. You just put a few drops of essential oil into the top of the burner, and then light a night light underneath. Vaporizers usually have a deeper dish into which you add water, whether you use an oil burner or a vaporizer; do be careful not to let it burn dry!

Used in this way the oils can become mood enhancers. They can remove stale smells or even help with conditions such as headaches, colds or insomnia. Another way to perfume a room is to gather flowers and herbs from your garden and hang them up in bundles to dry.

I hope you have now a few ideas on how to create a warm, relaxing atmosphere for aromatherapy massage.

Aromatherapy and Its Benefits

Cathy Taylor Said:

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that makes use of the body’s sense of smell to help boost your mood, relieve stress as well as encourage better health. Aromatherapy uses volatile liquid plant materials called essential oils, and other compounds from plants for the purpose of healing.

Various fragrant substances are used during aromatherapy sessions, such as aromatherapy soy candles, and each smell can produce a different result. For example, peppermint and eucalyptus scents are often used to help stimulate the body for people who are feeling sluggish. Lavender and chamomile can have the opposite effect as it helps a person relax.  Lemon and rosemary are effective at revitalizing a tired body.

Our sense of smell is very powerful.  In fact, the body can distinguish around 10,000 different scents!  As a scent is inhaled, the smell travels across the olfactory nerves located inside the nose and then up into the part of the brain that controls our moods, our memories and our ability to learn. This area is called the Limbic System and when stimulated it releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other ‘feel-good’ chemicals. In other words, aromatherapy triggers various responses in the body.

Aromatherapy also works by absorbing the essential oils that have been extracted from plants, fruits, herbs and flowers into the blood stream. This method is perfectly safe and if you’ve ever rubbed a fragrant lotion, cream or ointment into your skin or received a massage, you’ve already indulged in this type of aromatherapy.

Fragrances used in aromatherapy are many and are commonly added to:

- Lotions

- Inhalants

- Gels

- Candles

- Bath salts

- Vaporizers

- Perfumes, and

- Room sprays

Aromatherapy oils extracted from naturally occurring materials are unlike synthetic fragrances and perfumes which can cause allergies and irritation. Essential oils are safe to use for every one and evidence of its use has been found as far back as Ancient Egyptian civilizations.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

You don’t have to pay someone a fortune to do it – it is something you can learn to do at home

Many people seek out professional massage therapists or visit expensive spas for their aromatherapy sessions. While this is a great way to indulge if you can afford to, it’s easy to learn how to do aromatherapy right in the comfort of your own home.  All you need are some candles, essential oils or bath oils and a burner or diffuser.  You will also want to find a comfortable space for your aromatherapy session where you can totally relax.

There’s nothing unhealthy about it – Aromatherapy is a completely natural approach that will improve your health.

Aromatherapy is a great alternative to other treatment options such as prescription medications and caffeine. When used properly, there are no or very few side effects.  Some of the side effects that can emerge are due primarily to a person’s sensitivity to certain ingredients that they might have an allergic response to. Most people are aware of their particular sensitivities so you can easily avoid those.

Aromatherapy is great for alleviating minor discomforts before they become a big deal!

While aromatherapy isn’t going to cure a major illness, it is very effective at:

- alleviating minor aches and pains in joints

- improving the functionality of the immune system

- relieving the symptoms of menstrual cramps

- improving your skin tone

- relaxing muscles (something you can do every day if you want)

- lowering blood pressure

- clearing congestion

- improving circulation to the scalp which helps reduce dandruff and helps promote healthy hair growth

- relieving tension that causes headaches, and

- improving sleep

Aromatherapy is an art of healing without hurting yourself. Ever since this aroma therapy healing and medication came into picture, the first popular aromatherapy was skin care. Aromatherapy skin care is attained by using natural oils and herbs to gain optimal skin health and beauty.

Aromatherapy skin care products are not made of any artificial elements which will damage the sensitivity of the skin. Every person has their own skin needs depending on age and skin type.

Aromatherapy skin care differs from person to person. So, some combination of oils is made to reach the need of the individual. The combination of oils is referred as aromatherapy skin care solution.

Starting the aromatherapy skin care treatment:

Before you start the aroma treatment on your skin, you need a small brush up i.e. the skin must be properly cleaned with a combination of vitamin E oil and seaweed (marine plant). This combination helps to remove the make up on the skin and debris on the outer layer of the skin. This process is necessary to prepare the skin for aromatherapy.

The key to aromatherapy skin care is to match the individual skin type with the essential oils and enhance the beauty of the skin with these benefits.

Applying oils to the skin is in the form of massage oils, mineral baths and sprays. Specific oil is not used all times. Choose the oil which suits your ideology or mood. The below research will help you:

• Lavender: Balancing, soothing, normalizing and clarifying the skin.

• Eucalyptus: Purifying, balancing, cooling and invigorating the skin.

Oily skin: A combination of lavender, bergamot and Clary sage are used with rose water or orange flower water to make a mixture, which will clear the pores of the skin and have a fresh feeling. Massage should be done in circular motions and the movements should be gentle. Added in bathing water may not give 100% results, but can be preferred if you do not like hand massage.

Normal skin: A combination of lavender, Clary sage, lemon and chamomile is used for balancing, toning and refreshing the skin. Massage should be done in circular motion with slow to medium pats. This combination can also be added in bathing water if you do not want to go for a hand massage.

Dry skin: A combination of almond, rose, lavender, bergamot, patchouli, sandalwood with rose water will make the dry skin glow. The combination acts as a moisturizer to the skin. Massage should be in straight and circular motions with fast to medium pats. Mixture added in water will also yield good results. Ylang Ylang is also very good moisturizing oil.

Aromatherapy can also be done through inhalation. Few drops of aroma oils added to hot water also gives a soothing effect to the mind, as the smell stimulates the brain and activates it. Injection is also another method of aromatherapy. It injects the oils directly into the body to stimulate the mucous membranes.

Aromatherapy with lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improves sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders. In a cool bath the oil will refresh and energise. Lavender oil makes a superlative skin or facial oil for troubled skin conditions such as acne and gives temporary relief to the symptoms. Lavender flowers have also been approved in Germany as a tea for insomnia, and nervous stomach irritations.

It is also used visibly in a healing bath for circulatory disorders and as a rub for rheumatic ailments (conditions affecting the muscles and joints). Lavender should not be used during the early stages of pregnancy. Use Lavender with caution if you have low blood pressure.
